Restorative Yoga: Poses & Practice for Deep Relaxation

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga uses props and long-held, supported poses to activate the body's relaxation response. It's ideal for stress reduction, recovery, and improving sleep.

What Makes Restorative Yoga Different?

Unlike more active forms of yoga, restorative practice emphasizes stillness and breath. Poses are supported so muscles can fully relax while the nervous system calms.

Simple Restorative Poses

  • Supported Child's Pose: Use bolsters under the torso and allow the head to rest gently.
  • Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani): Rest your legs vertically against a wall with a folded blanket under the hips.
  • Supported Reclining Bound Angle: Place blocks under the knees and a bolster along the spine for a gentle heart opener.

How to Practice Safely

Start with just 10–15 minutes. Use cushions, blankets, and blocks to make poses fully comfortable. Focus on slow, steady breathing and let go of any urge to 'do' something.

Benefits

Regular restorative practice can lower cortisol, improve sleep quality, reduce chronic pain, and support emotional resilience.
